It's failed to start three times today. Locking and unlocking, then starting it seems to work. Calling the dealer tomorrow. I can't have my car be this unreliable.

When you say failed to start, is it turning over but no ignition or is there a few clicks or a single click?

Locking and unlocking and then starting s ounds like something to do with your immobiliser than anything mechanical.

Have you changed the batteries in your keyfob? It mayb e the keyfob or the receiver in the steering column.

Maybe it's the cold weather messing with it?

That’s weird.  I too am wondering if it turns over at all.

Those exact symptoms happen to me when I somehow trip my alarm. Doesn't turn over, have to lock and unlock the doors.

Fob battery. Super common.

Sounds  like you need a Tercel.

I second what Svend said. Definitely sounds PATS (or whatever ford uses now) related. Does it have a proximity key or a regular chip key?

Not starting when I press the button. I'll try changing the fob battery.

Not a guarantee, but it’s a solid guess, a nd a cheap fix if that's it.

Doesn’t seem like it.

It turns over once it decides to start. But I can hit the start button, nothing happens, lock and unlock, it starts.

If it’s your fob battery there is a spot either on the steering column or in the center console to put the key to start the car. The fobs have something like an RFID chip in them as backup that the car can read if the fob is placed in the appropriate location.

Change the battery before you take it in, might save you the $100 diag fee

It's funny. None of my 25+year-old Jeeps do that, ever.

I have plenty of other issues to add to the list, so I'll give it a shot.
